The 4th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival, October 14 – 21, 2011
With new events, panels, receptions, and the largest selection of science based films to date, the 4th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival promises to be an exciting eight days filled with science and cinema. The themes of this year’s program are aging, immortality, and space, with evenings devoted to avant-garde science shorts, documentaries, footage from actual lab experiments, discussions about humanizing science through its depiction in film, and an afternoon of child-friendly science based films. The Imagine Science Film Festival is the only film festival in the world founded by scientists to showcase films presenting accurate scientific fact in compelling visual narratives. The festival aims to transform the way science is portrayed in mainstream media, while emphasizing the importance of storytelling, narrative structure, and visual communication.

Mr. Nobody
The New York premiere of Mr. Nobody will be hosted by the Museum of Moving Image for the opening night of the Imagine Science Film Festival. Mr. Nobody, is a sci-fi drama directed by Jaco Van Dormael and stars Jared Leto and Diane Kruger. It begins in the year 2092 with Nemo (Mr. Nobody) as a 117 year-old man and the last living mortal. Nemo guides the audience on a non-linear journey through different stages of his life. When his memory begins to fail, it becomes increasingly difficult to decipher which elements from the story are real and what is a product of his imagination.
Mr. Nobody is framed by scientific theories about cognition and memory, which will be explored by scientists and filmmakers during a panel discussion after the screening.

The visions intensify and the medical students are forced to go deeper into the death experience to find a cure.

CELLULOID SCIENCE: HUMANIZING LIFE IN THE LAB
In collaboration with NYAS’ Science and the City, and Center for Inquiry
Thursday, October 20, 2011 7pm »
—PANEL DISCUSSION—
With NYAS’ Science and the City program, ISFF presents a panel discussion on the ability of film to humanize science.
A discussion about humanizing science will be moderated by the popular science journalist and blogger Carl Zimmer, and will feature panelists Dr. Sean Carroll (Evo-Devo HHMI scientist), Dr. Heeger (leading neurocinematics specialists), Valerie Weiss (scientist and award-winning filmmaker), and Dr. Darcy Kelley (neuroscientist at Columbia University and Sloan consultant)
If you know anything about science, you understand that it is a highly complex human endeavor that mixes perseverance and luck, eccentricity and training, and feasts and famines. As a medium, film has the potential to bring us into the inner world of science, breaking down misconceptions about the nature of science by creating an alternate narrative.
