L Train to Bedford / JMZ to MarcySpectacle Theater will host a screening of the acclaimed animated science fiction film Fantastic Planet tonight, November 23rd, at 9:30pm. Located in Williamsburg Brooklyn, Spectacle Theater offers screenings every week that cover a range of genres, from topical documentaries to campy zombie films for only $5.
Fantastic Planet, directed by Rene Laloux, is a French and Czechoslovakian production that is hailed as a European animation masterpiece. The film touches on human existence and interaction, the frailty of human life, and the desire to share knowledge with others. The story highlights the surreal idea of distant, unknown planets.
The original score for Fantastic Planet was composed by Alain Goraguer. Meant to compliment the hypnotic imagery of the film, the score was an avant-garde mix of musical genres that kept the audience alert and provoked. Silver Process, a New York-based experimental band, will perform a live improvised score for Wednesday’s screening. The band is comprised of Chuck Bettis on electronics, Joe Merolla on violoncello, David Pearson on baritone saxophone, and Nonoko Yoshida on alto saxophone. Fantastic Planet will be one in the repertory of films that Silver Process has scored.
