Fried Egg Jelly
  • Sophia Tintori | 4 mins | USA

CreatureCast.org brings you stories about animals, from some of the people who study them. In this episode, Trisha Towanda narrates the coming of age story of the crabs that live on top of the fried egg jellyfish. This story came out of research she did at Evergreen, following the many animals that set up home on the jelly’s huge floating body in the middle of the ocean. By watching these animals fight and grow and change, she noticed that the crabs are an unusual type of symbiont; one whose relationship to it’s home changes as the animal gets older.

    DIRECTOR’S BIO
Sophia Tintori is a lab technician in Casey Dunn’s evolutionary biology lab at Brown University. She studies a type of jellyfish called a siphonophore, which looks like a chandelier or a very elaborate earring. Sophia is most interested in the way embryonic development evolved, and what it takes for the cells in a body to get along with each other. When she is not working with jellyfish in the lab she is making videos and writing stories for CreatureCast.org , the lab’s nature podcast and blog.
